Famous Barr was a department store chain based in St. Louis, Missouri. It was founded in 1911 by William Barr and David May, and grew to become one of the largest department store chains in the Midwest. Famous Barr was known for its upscale merchandise and high-quality customer service.
The chain was eventually acquired by Macy's in 2006, and the Famous Barr stores were rebranded as Macy's. However, the legacy of Famous Barr lives on in the form of the Famous-Barr Cup, a golf tournament held annually in St. Louis.
Famous Barr was known for its iconic red shopping bags and its tagline, "Where the budgets are lower and the fashions are higher." The chain had a loyal customer base and was a beloved institution in the St. Louis community.
